Korgonthurus are not a new band but their music might be new to you. Though they started in 2000 and have many releases under their belt they only released their second album in May - 'Vuohen Siunaus'. This Finnish Black Metal band have a scathing sound that, at times, remind me of Burzum, Gorgoroth, Drudkh, Winterfylleth or even sometimes Sarcofago. Their vocals give a harsh shriek that is also powerful, whilst sometimes variating it to an ablaze roar fit for Black Metal. Their music fits this with sustained moments of harsh guitars that saw it's way into your flesh.
So with 'Vuohen Siunaus', their first album since 2009, we see a mature and powerful sound with their music. They are unashamed to be scathing their way through your ear drums in a way that shakes you and calls forth the devil within you. Their evil atmosphere is sustained whilst offering very varied and powerful tracks. 'Kaaos' starts strong and powerful to this effect before quickly taking us into 'Pudhisluksen Tulet'. This track feels more atmospheric and slow, suffering its length at times but offering a punishing drum beat. 'I.K.P.N.' feels faster and relentless but is otherwise a powerful song in vocal shrieks before the title track which fills an evil void and poisons your heart. 'Inho' offers the albums best tremolo picking before taking us to 'Ihmisyyden Raunioilla' which has some scathing and scratching Black Metal melodies. The final track 'L.U.X.' is ambitious but varied enough to tell a complex story of interchanging parts and complex evil.
For an album so powerful and fast that it's speed is a strength, without missing a careful dark atmosphere with the slower sections, it is strange that song lengths can be an issue at times. Sometimes the strength of a riff should be left behind. However this is a very strong album by Korgonthurus and the most impressed I've been with Finnish Black Metal since i discovered Ajattara.
