London based melodic hardcore rockers Conflict North have dropped their debut EP 'Treading Water' and a video single from it as well. Rising from the ashes of bands Searching Alaska and Kraken, the band are wasting no time!
When you see a band that describe themselves as hardcore it is easy to draw a conclusion before you have heard them (expecting chuggy guitars, thrashy elements and brutal screaming). Opening tracks 'This Too Shall Pass' and 'Lessons Learnt' and most of the EP beyond this contain all of the above with roaring riffs and pacey sections in the music (Not a bad thing as it ticks all the boxes). The general feel of the bands music along with their diversity are more like a move beyond traditional hardcore. We have seen the likes of Parkway Drive and While She Sleeps make leaps in the metal genre and Conflict North seem to have taken a sizable jump here with them incorporating aspects such as chanting, raw vocals, dramatic changes in pace and quieter moments with clean vocals taking lead. All of these elements very positively make this EP much more than just six hardcore tracks.
Single 'Labyrinths' hits hard much like many of the tracks on the EP. The song does have that little bit more flare that you hope to see in a single/video track and it seems clear that it takes the bands sound one step onward in terms of progression as a whole. Emotive screams, big ballsy sounding instruments and sporadic backing cleans/lead vocals that ease their way into the music without sounding out of place. The song is great and the video is dark and awesome!
It's hard to pick a highlight with these dudes because the EP really took me by surprise. 'All I Have' is a banger amongst other bangers so I will go with that! Quite frankly the EP is great. Expect to see a lot more of these guys in the future!
